NCARB’s Improving Building Performance Continuing Education

This continuing education series was updated and developed for NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards). The original continuing education booklet was written by Wolfgang F.E. Preiser. In 2015, he was approached by NCARB to update the content of the document and break it up into several smaller ‘mini-monographs’.

Wolf and Andrea had just worked together on Architecture Beyond Criticism on a chapter outlining the history of post-occupancy evaluations (POE) and building performance, so it was a natural fit for Andrea to be brought onto the team for this project.

Andrea’s involvement including researching the current technologies in the field to update tools, methods, and the like in the text; editing the document; and, adding sections of text.

The second phase of this project included working with firms across the country to provide 4 POE case studies. Unfortunately, Wolf passed away during this phase of the project, so Andrea stepped into the point person position for this phase of the project. Andrea coordinated the timeline for firms to provide drafts by, edited their case studies, suggested areas to expand or to relate to methodologies or theories within POE and BPE, and co-wrote introductions to each of the case studies with Jacob J. Wilhelm, who Andrea brought onto the team after Wolf’s passing to assist with editing.

Phase I (Improving Building Performance Mini-monograph series) was completed in 2016.

Phase II (POE Case studies) was completed the end of 2017.
